OLIVIER KORBER - GARGANTUA & CHAMBER MUSIC
SHORT BIO
Olivier Korber stands out as a distinctive voice among the new generation of French composers. Published by Éditions Billaudot, his music is featured on a debut album from the Arion Music label, entirely devoted to his work. His compositions have been performed by the Quatuor Akilone, the Quatuor Magenta, the Orchestre Colonne, and violinist Emmanuel Coppey, under the direction of Marc Korovitch, Alizé Léhon, and Rémi Durupt.
Free from stylistic schools, Korber’s music pursues a clear dramatic logic where irony, lyricism, fragility, and instinctive energy coexist, leaving space for strangeness and wonder. Among his key works are Gargantua’s Day, an ensemble cycle inspired by Rabelais and the engravings of Gustave Doré, and the Sonata for Solo Violin, dedicated to Emmanuel Coppey. His String Quartet No. 1 won the Crédit Agricole / Freshly Composed Prize, and Korriground, commissioned by the Orchestre des Jeunes de Haute Bretagne, has been performed in France and Germany.
Composing since childhood, Korber studied harmony, counterpoint, and fugue with Isabelle Duha. A trained pianist, graduate of the Paris Conservatoire (CRR) and student of Rena Shereshevskaya, he is a laureate of the Nadia and Lili Boulanger Foundation. His recording devoted to Chopin (1001 Notes label) was praised by critics (4 Diapasons, 5 Croches by Pizzicato).
Invited to perform at festivals such as La Folle Journée de Nantes and the Chopin Festival of Nohant, he draws on his stage experience to craft music attuned to gesture, resonance, and the energy of performance.
A former lecturer in financial mathematics at the University of Paris-Dauphine, he remains passionate about theoretical physics and artificial intelligence, fields that mirror the formal vitality and sense of wonder at the heart of his music.
